Is Mercedes-Benz Discontinuing the Sprinter?

Yes and no. The gas-powered Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, along with the Mercedes-Benz Metris (all configurations), will be making their exit from the automotive market. When will these two vans depart, exactly? According to a memo sent to Mercedes-Benz dealers in the U.S., both vans will be taken off the market after the third quarter of 2023.

Over the past couple of years, most Mercedes-Benz Metris orders were placed as a result of a multi-year contract with the US Postal Service. Although the Metris fills a gap between compact and full-size vans, it never took off in terms of popularity — not quite as much as the Sprinter Van. So, why is the gas-powered Sprinter Van being discontinued? Read on to learn more from the Sprinter experts at Sprinter of Laguna Niguel.

What’s New for the 2023 Sprinter?

The main reason Mercedes-Benz is taking the gas-powered Sprinter off the market is to make space for a newer, more efficient model. Soon, Mercedes-Benz will be launching the latest generation of the eSprinter. The eSprinter isn’t brand-new; it was released in 2019 with a battery-electric drive system to deliver electric power. The 2023 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter is slated to debut sometime in February 2023. It’ll arrive with plenty of exciting 2023 Sprinter Van upgrades, as well as an advanced EV system to help reduce range anxiety for drivers. In fact, it’s expected to travel up to 295 miles on a single charge.

In addition to the eSprinter, the diesel-powered Sprinter Vans will be sticking around as well. If you’re considering a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, you’ll have the 4-cylinder diesel-powered Sprinter Vans to choose from after the gas engine is phased out.
